The 17th edition of Battlefield take place in the year 2042. One could easily think that we really were that far out in the future, with all the nice features for us players. We are bursting with excitement, so let us look at some of the new game modes.
Conquest and Breakthrough
As always, the game takes place during a great war with two large teams against each other. In the past there’s been 64 players in-game, but as with everything else in Battlefield 2042, it gets bigger with 128 players. 64 on each team. Defense against attack. The game feature maps with everything from rocket launches in French Guyana, tornadoes in a giant South Korean metropolis and sandstorms in Qatar. Accordingly, every map is incredibly dynamic, with new and unexpected things happening at any minute.
Portal
Where shall we even begin? The slogan to Portal is “Change the Rules of War”: It is one of the most ambitious game modes in the Battlefield-franchise, but also amongst other FPS-games.
DICE and EA has been through the archives and rediscovered the earlier, most popular editions: Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, pulled maps, weapons and vehicles and thrown them all in a mixing pot to get Battlefield Portal: where 1942 meets 2042 and everything in between. It’s knives against stun-guns, new against old. A lot that is seemingly unfair, but that has probably been taken into consideration.
Even though it can be difficult to imagine, try watching the trailer. It’s gonna be crazy-cool.
Specialists
One of the big changes are the specialists. In the past you chose a class if you wanted specific weapons. In 2042 you have access to 10 specialists with a free range of weapons, but instead chose your specialist for their unique Specialty and Trait. Besides just weapons and unique traits, every specialist also has their own backstory.
Hazard Zone
This is Battlefields Battle Royale, even though it is not quite the same. Game director Daniel Berlin says, “choosing the right gear and the right strategy for your team means everything.”
Berlin also confirms that specialists will be in the Hazard Zone. It’s rumored that it will look like ‘Escape from Tarkov’. You spawn somewhere in the map, where you loot weapons and equipment that will help your squad to victory.
